History Reflection -Crystal (07)

-group work and individual contributions to project- include something on preparing for the presentations and what u learned having to teach the class
- problems encountered and attempts to solve these: what have you learned from this?
- research skills, history skills like analysing sources, inferring, mindmapping, organising, questioning sources etc, multiliteracies skills ( english) such as planning movie, shooting, scripting, storyboarding

1.Group work and individual contributions to project- include something on preparing for the presentations and what u learned having to teach the class.

As for the group work and individual contributions to project, I think everyone in my group did co-operate with each other. Also, my leader, did do well by dividing the tasks equally on what we were suppposed to do. I was the IT resourse before doing the video. I need to find pictures(sources) and explain to them why i choose those pictures and if they think is related to the project, they will post it online.77
I was the prop master and hence I have to bring things that are needed for the Fort Siloso trip and also help the actor and actress to get ready.30
For the preparing of the presentation, i gave Nigel links and some ideas to him. Nigel divided task to every members for contribution of the presentation. We also refer to Ken’s group which presented before us, which in a way gave us a better idea on how to present better when our turn comes. For example, we should have eye contact with the audience rather than just reading out from the paper and speak continuously without even a pause. 79
If you speak continuously to the class without pausing, the listeners would feel very boring and maybe would not be listening at all. Therefore, our group had learned the importance of eye contact in order to capture the listeners attention. 40
On the presentation day itself, Yuenice and Kim was the presenters. After the presentation, we realised we did not have an introduction and just started with ‘kempeitai’. We should had gave a brief introduction like a narrative curve (building up the topic) to then start the topic. 47

2) Problems encountered and attempts to solve these: What have you learned from this?
- But must analyse reasons for problems encountered , suggest solutions and don’t just say some people were irresponsible , must explain what responsibility mean and give examples

The very first trip for Fort Siloso was not smooth as it rained heavily and thus our flimming was very unsucessful. To afriad the second trip might rain again, we change our plan here and there. Luckily, the second trip was not dissapointing as it was not raining.Although we did finish all the film, we did not have sufficient time to interview tourists(part of our plan). Due to this, we had to interview our friends. 77
Basically for the first part of the project, we did not really encounter any problems. Our group did what we were suppose to do, though sometimes our tasks was complete on time, we will explain to the leader why did we complete it late. 44
For the second part of the project (getting ready for the Fort Siloso trip), we went to Diana’s house to discuss for the up coming trip. (the plan, plot, props needed, further research). We divided ourselves into smaller teams to complete everything at a faster pace. 46

Word Count: 167 words.

3)Research skills, history skills like analysing sources, inferring, mindmapping, organising, questioning sources etc, multiliteracies skills ( english) such as planning movie, shooting, scripting, storyboarding

I learned how to apply Miss Lee taught us to use reseach skills. By not simply copy and paste but try to rewrite the sentence by your understanding of the sentence. By using a mindmap to plan and organise and then writing out research. Also, asking research questions to help you focus. You can link them to the skills of inferring to help yourself to understand better. 67
After analysing the source, i should do a mind-map by asking questions myself. To organise the paragraphs, I can use teacher taught me the skill P.E.E.L (main Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link back to the main point). 36
We will check our tenses or vocabulary used also the shooting of the movie was wrote on a paper beforre litery saying out. We always remind each other to speak English when we are doing our projects. As for vocabulary, some of us will check out new words, and as for grammar, everyone have a part to play. In addition we will discuss what we wrote(Is the tenses correct? ;Should we use another word?; I prefer this word to that word) if is correct or wrong. 77

For the individual contributions to the project, i have researched on the kempeitai and sook ching which was related to our presentation topic which was about hardship of civillians , things that civillians feared. Even though i was not the presenter i learnt a few things from our presentation which was, to make eye contact with the class. Another thing was that most questions were ‘ Why ?’ questions. Therefore we should think of more Why questions and how to solve it, give a clearer explanation and elaborate.

The first trip to fort siloso was dissapointing as not long after we have reached, it started to rain quite heavily. Therefore we did not have the chance to film outdoors based on the scripts we have prepared. But we actually managed to change some of our script and film a bit when we were indoors in the surrender chambers . On the other hand, we still did not have a successful trip as not much was filmed and done.

However on the second trip, it did not rain. Therefore we managed to film and done almost everything we had planned for. I think it was successful as we had co-operated and sticked to our tasks well.

As for Research skills, i learnt that we should not just copy blindly and paste whatever information we have found but read and summarize whatever we have learnt from the source.

For History skills, i learnt the PEEL method.

P- main Point

E- Evidence

E- Explanation

L- Link back to question.

What we have learnt from english was also used in History, which was the 5W1H method. Answering Why questions are very important as we have to know how to elaborate and explain our answers clearly.

Sook Ching, directy translated into 肃清(su ching) is a term which means a purge cleansing. It was a massacre which destroyed all hostile factors amongst the chinese in Singapore. After the fall of Singapore, Lieutenant Colonel Masayuki Oishi, commander of the number 2 field kempeitai set up his headquarters at the YMCA Building in Stamford road. Anyone suspected of traitory, is sent to these kempeitai branches. In reality, the screening was arbitrary and non-selective, and could involve as little as walking past a Japanese officer. Most of these victims were innocent people and were just killed brutally without reason. The ones who passed the ’screening’ would receive a piece of paper with “Examined” written on it, or have a square ink mark on their arms and shirts. Those who did not pass the “screening” would be stamped with triangular marks. There were trucks near these screening centres wgich would send those who failed to their deaths. The japanese chose remote sites such as Changi, Punggol to perform executions. Victims were thrown overboard off boats, killed with a bayonet, or shot to death off the harbour. After the Japanese military realized that they could not kill off as many as 50,000 Chinese, and that Japan’s resources were being stretched with advances in other parts of South-East Asia. The head of the authorities called off the killing on the third of March.

Singapore. Workers and civilians co-operating in the rescue of the wounded from the buildings damaged by bombing in a Japanese Air Attack.

SINGAPORE. A.R.P. WORKERS AND CIVILIANS CO-OPERATING IN THE RESCUE OF WOUNDED FROM BUILDINGS DAMAGED BY BOMBING IN A JAPANESE AIR ATTACK.
Here is a Picture of Singapore during the Japanese Occupation.

This Picture tells me that there was a serious war going on at that time, places were bombed here and there. Many lifes were lost due to this war. Not only were lives lost, many buildings were destroyed too.I know this because the Japanese bombed places. The picture is one example of a place where it was bombed by the Japanese. The civillians and workers were rushing to the aid of those who were injured. The buildings and vehicles have been badly damaged.A man looks like he is sobbing, with his hand on his face. It shows the sadness he feels. This man could be a relative or friend of one of the injured or dead. Thus i think war is something that is cruel,War should be best avoided.Picture from :http://www.a2o.com.sg/a2o/public/search/index.html
