b&w film copy neg.

I went to search for ’Alabama homes pictures 1930′ as what I had read in chapter one, it says ‘Maycomb was an old town, but it was tired old town..’ and also, ’Somehow, it was hotter than; a black dog suffered on a summer’s day..’ Thus, after interpretating this two sentences, it tells me that Maycomb have not much old houses, very spacious, and the weather is scorching hot during the afternoon. Therefore, I chose this picture as it shows an old house, the grass is very dry and the plants are wiltering soon.

Chapter 2 -To kill a mocking bird

1.Hours of wintertime had found me in the tree-house looking over at the school yard, spying on multitudes of children through a two-power telescope Jem had given me, learning thier games, following Jem’s red jacket through wriggling circles of blind man’s bluff, secretly sharing their misfortunes and minor victories.

2.Jem condescended to take me to school the first day, a job usally done by one’s parents, but Atticus had said Jem would be delighted to show me where my room was.

3.The class murmured apprehensively, should she prove to harbour hershare of the peculiarities indigenous to that region.

4. I never deliberately learned to read, but somehow I had been wallowing illicitly in the daily papers.

5. I turned around and saw most of the town people and the entire bus delegaion looking at me.

6. With christmas came a crate of smilax and holly.

7. Entaliment (Page 23) was only part of Mr Cunningham’s vexations.

8. The acres not entailed were mortgaged to the hilt, and the little cash he made went to interest.

9. I would saved myself some inconvinience and Miss Caroline subsequent mortification, but it was beyond my ability to explain things as well as Atticus, so I said “You’re shaming him, Miss Caroline. Walter hasn’t got a quater at home to bring you, and you can’t use any stovewood.”

10. My sojourn in the corner was a short one.

Here are the sentences for Chapter 2, I will post the meaning asap.

If there’s any other vocabulary words, please kindly post comment under this post with the full sentence in that particular word.

1. Why do you think Jem did not want Scout to talk to himand have to leave him alone when they are in school?

2. Why do you think Miss Caroline asked Scout to tell Atticus not to teach her anymore? When she is literate and could read quite well.

3. Why do you think Miss Caroline ‘whipped’ Scout as she is just trying to explain to her why Walter didn’t have his lunch with him?

Yuenice:
1. I think Jem thought that having a first grade sister is a disgrace.
2. I think Miss Caroline wanted everyone in class to start at the same pace and she is introducing a new system into the school, hence maybe it will be easier for her if Scout will just follow and not question about the system with her current knowledge.
3. I think Miss Caroline still does not understand what Scout said and took it as Scout is insulting Walter. Miss Caroline from north Alabama obviously did not have an idea of how life was like in Maycomb and treated everyone fairly which is not possible in this unfair town.

1.What do you think is chapter one trying to tell?

The first few paragraphs talked about Jem’s injuried arm and followed by the reason why he was injuried. Then led to their family background.
Do you think their main focus for this chapter is on the reason why he was injuried?

Yuenice:
I think chapter one is trying to form their character and introducing who are in the story to build up the storyboard. Their main focus isn’t on why Jem is injuried or their family background. They are trying to let the readers have an image of where the story happened at and the life of the people at that time in the story.

‘But its a time of vague optimism for some of the people; Maycomb Country had recently been told that it had nothing to fear but fear itself.’ gave an idea of how life was like and the how the characters grew up.

Why do you think the author gave each character a short name instead of having their whole name out? example: Jem was called Jem instead of his full name jeremy Atticus Finch.
What the author wants us to feel then?
